Bogotá

Colombia · Americas

Perched high on an Andean plateau at 2,640 meters, Bogotá is Colombia’s sophisticated, high-energy cultural epicentre. Towering green Andean peaks frame a dynamic city of colonial history in La Candelaria, striking gold museums, and one of South America's most exciting fine-dining scenes.

My 3 Weeks Here

The cool, brisk mountain air of the high Andes greeted me as I landed in Bogotá, 8,660 feet above sea level. I checked into the Four Seasons Hotel Casa Medina Bogotá in the fashionable culinary district of Zona G. Housed in a designated historic monument with hand-carved wooden doors, stone columns, and crackling fireplaces, my Grand Suite ($650/night) combined Spanish colonial heritage with contemporary luxury.

I started my day in La Candelaria, the cobblestone historic center. Walking past vibrant colonial houses with wrought-iron balconies and street murals, I visited the Museo del Oro (Gold Museum), admiring over 30,000 dazzling pre-Columbian gold artifacts, including the famous Muisca golden raft of El Dorado. At noon, I rode the funicular railway to the summit of Monserrate at 3,152 meters, gazing out over the vast metropolis stretching across the Andean savanna.

The gastronomic pinnacle of Bogotá was dining at Leo, Chef Leonor Espinosa’s world-celebrated restaurant. Her "Ciclo-Bioma" tasting menu ($180) is an anthropological journey through Colombia’s forgotten ecosystems. I savored pirarucu river fish from the Amazon, Santander big-bottomed ants, and fermented palm nectar, paired with artisanal ancestral distillates.

The following evening, we journeyed just outside the city to the legendary Andrés Carne de Res in Chía. Spanning multiple eccentric floors decorated with theatrical art, glowing hearts, and roaming actors, it is part steakhouse, part carnival, and part national dance party. Feasting on prime grilled lomo al trapo and dancing salsa until the early hours, Bogotá proved to be an unforgettable Andean jewel of intellectual depth and unrestrained joy.
