Budapest

Hungary · Europe

The Queen of the Danube unites the hilly historic grandeur of Buda with the vibrant cosmopolitan buzz of Pest. Famous for ornate thermal bathhouses, neo-Gothic parliament spires, and quirky ruin bars in the Jewish Quarter.

My 3 Weeks Here

Standing on the balcony of the Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace—an Art Nouveau triumph at the foot of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge—I watched the sunset illuminate the monumental Hungarian Parliament building in radiant gold across the Danube. Budapest has a grandeur that rivals Paris and Vienna, but with an edgy, bohemian spirit all its own.

My morning began across the river on the Buda side. Climbing up to Fisherman's Bastion at 8:00 AM, the fairytale neo-Romanesque turrets and arches offered sweeping, unobstructed views of Pest across the water. We stepped inside Matthias Church, its colorful diamond-patterned Zsolnay tile roof gleaming in the morning light. Afterwards, we stopped at Ruszwurm, Budapest's oldest confectionery (operating since 1827), to savor their legendary Ruszwurm Krémes (€4.50)—layers of crisp puff pastry sandwiching impossibly light vanilla custard cream.

In the afternoon, I experienced Budapest's iconic spa heritage. We booked a private cabin at Széchenyi Thermal Baths, soaking in the naturally heated, mineral-rich outdoor medicinal pools surrounded by grand neo-baroque yellow palatial facades. Watching local Hungarian grandmasters play chess on floating boards while steam rose into the crisp air was utterly iconic.

As darkness descended, we explored the eccentric Jewish Quarter. We ducked into Szimpla Kert, the original 'ruin bar' built inside an abandoned pre-war factory, filled with mismatched vintage furniture, fairy lights, and open-air courtyards. For dinner, we boarded a private wooden river cruiser (€450) with champagne and a multi-course dinner, gliding directly beneath the illuminated arches of the Chain Bridge and Parliament. Budapest is pure sensory magic.
