Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is the spiritual and cultural heart of Northern Thailand, surrounded by mist-shrouded jungle mountains, centuries-old Lanna teak temples, ethical elephant sanctuaries, and a legendary artisan coffee culture.
My 3 Weeks Here
Nestled in the lush Mae Rim Valley just outside Chiang Mai, my villa at the Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai (38,000 THB per night) looked over stepped emerald rice paddies where local farmers in indigo mor hom shirts tended the fields alongside gentle water buffaloes. Chiang Mai breathes an intoxicating, slow-paced charm that immediately calms your pulse.
My days started with early morning temple explorations inside the historic moated Old City. At Wat Chedi Luang, the massive 14th-century ruined brick stupa stood majestic against the sapphire morning sky, with saffron-robed monks chanting softly in the adjoining viharn. Later, I drove up the winding jungle mountain road to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (50 THB entry), ascending the 306-step dragon-flanked staircase to see the gleaming golden chedi towering above panoramic vistas of the entire Chiang Mai basin.
Northern Thai cuisine is deeply distinctive, fragrant with turmeric, ginger, and fermented herbs. At Khao Soi Lam Duan Fah Ham, I slurped down a bowl of Khao Soi Gai (65 THB)—tender chicken drumstick bathed in rich, spiced coconut curry soup, topped with crispy egg noodles, fresh lime, shallots, and pickled greens. In the trendy Nimmanhaemin district, I explored artisanal specialty roasteries like Ristr8to, sipping world champion flat whites (130 THB) alongside digital nomads and local creatives.
An unforgettable day was spent at an ethical elephant rescue sanctuary in the jungle foothills. Rather than riding, we walked alongside rescued Asian elephants, hand-feeding them sweet watermelons and bananas before joining them for a refreshing mud bath in a mountain stream. Ending the evening with a craft cocktail at The Service 1921 inside the Anantara on the banks of the Ping River, Chiang Mai felt like an authentic spiritual sanctuary.
