Colombo

Sri Lanka · Asia

Colombo is a dynamic oceanfront capital blending colonial Portuguese, Dutch, and British architecture with stylish rooftop lounges, spicy Sri Lankan seafood feasts, and Geoffrey Bawa’s legendary tropical modernist design.

My 3 Weeks Here

Checking into the iconic Galle Face Hotel (roughly $220 USD per night), Colombo’s grand dame founded in 1864, I was greeted by the booming roar of the Indian Ocean crashing against the sea wall. Sitting on the checkered verandah as the hotel bagpiper played the sunset hymn while the national flag was lowered, cold Pimm’s cup in hand, Colombo revealed its timeless, evocative seaside majesty.

My architecture pilgrimage began with Number 11, the private residence and studio of legendary architect Geoffrey Bawa. Walking through the sun-dappled courtyards, reflecting pools, and seamless indoor-outdoor living spaces (3,000 LKR entry), I gained a profound appreciation for Tropical Modernism. Later, I explored the vibrant chaos of the Pettah Market, where multi-colored spice sacks, Ceylon cinnamon bark, and glittering sari fabrics spilled across the bustling colonial streets.

Sri Lankan seafood is legendary, and dining at Ministry of Crab inside the restored 400-year-old Old Dutch Hospital was an absolute highlight. I tied on a bib and tackled a colossal 1.5kg 'Colossal' lagoon mud crab simmered in fiery black pepper sauce (35,000 LKR), mopping up the fragrant gravy with warm, toasted kade bread. The balance of sweet, succulent crab meat with crushed indigenous Sri Lankan peppercorns was sublime.

As twilight painted the ocean horizon in flaming shades of apricot and violet, I walked down Galle Face Green. Families flew colorful kites in the warm monsoon breeze while street vendors fried crispy isso vadai (spiced lentil patties studded with whole prawns, 100 LKR). Ending the night at the rooftop bar of ON14 overlooking the illuminated coastline, Colombo demonstrated why Sri Lanka's capital is a sophisticated tropical gem.
