Istanbul
The legendary crossroads of Europe and Asia where Byzantine domes, Ottoman minarets, and the bustling Bosphorus strait converge. Istanbul intoxicates the senses with fragrant spice bazaars, lavish hamams, and an ultra-chic modern waterfront scene.
My 3 Weeks Here
Stepping onto the private waterfront terrace of the Çırağan Palace Kempinski—a restored 19th-century Ottoman imperial palace right on the Bosphorus—I felt the timeless pulse of Istanbul. Container ships and elegant mahogany yachts cut through the deep blue strait as the call to prayer echoed from minarets across both the European and Asian shores.
My morning began in the historic heart of Sultanahmet. Stepping inside the Hagia Sophia, the sheer scale of the 6th-century dome suspended 180 feet overhead took my breath away; sunlight poured through forty arched windows, illuminating gilded Byzantine mosaics and massive Ottoman calligraphic medallions. Across the square, the Blue Mosque shone with twenty thousand handmade Iznik ceramic tiles in shades of turquoise and cobalt.
Next, I dove into the labyrinth of the Grand Bazaar. Navigating its four thousand shops with a private shopper, we uncovered antique Suzani silks, hand-knotted Anatolian kilim rugs, and bespoke 24-karat gold jewelry. Over steaming glasses of Turkish tea served in tulip-shaped glasses, I bargained for an exquisite hand-hammered silver coffee set (4,200 TRY). We followed the scent of saffron, cardamom, and sumac to the nearby Egyptian Spice Bazaar, sampling ruby-red pomegranate Turkish delight stuffed with roasted pistachios.
In the afternoon, I treated myself to a traditional royal treatment at the historic Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamam (€130). Lying on the heated marble Göbektaşı stone beneath an ancient dome, enveloped in clouds of olive-oil soap lather and exfoliated to glowing perfection, all travel fatigue melted away.
At dusk, we boarded a private luxury yacht for a Bosphorus sunset cruise (€400), sipping champagne as the waterfront mansions (Yalıs) lit up. We docked at Mikla for dinner, where chef Mehmet Gürs served New Anatolian cuisine—crispy octopus with pickled green tomatoes and slow-roasted lamb shoulder paired with rich Öküzgözü wine—all framed by a 360-degree rooftop view of the glittering city skyline. Istanbul is intoxicating, opulent, and utterly magnetic.
