Johannesburg
Johannesburg, the 'City of Gold' (eGoli), is the pulsating economic engine and creative dynamo of South Africa. From powerful historic landmarks in Soweto and cutting-edge contemporary art galleries in Rosebank to leafy affluent enclaves and Michelin-level dining in Saxonwold, Jozi buzzes with unstoppable cultural momentum.
My 3 Weeks Here
Johannesburg carries an intoxicating, raw creative vitality that surprises travelers who only see it as a transit hub. Checking into the legendary Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa ($850/night) in Sandhurst—the serene sanctuary where Nelson Mandela completed his autobiography *Long Walk to Freedom*—the manicured 10-acre gardens, infinity pool, and world-class African art collection felt worlds away from the city's urban energy.
My morning began with a deeply moving visit to the Apartheid Museum. Moving through the exhibits documenting South Africa's turbulent journey toward democracy was an essential, humbling experience. From there, I headed into Soweto (South Western Townships) with a local guide, cycling down Vilakazi Street—the only street in the world once home to two Nobel Peace Prize laureates: Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. We stopped for lunch at Sakhumzi Restaurant for traditional mogodu and braai meats accompanied by a cold Soweto Gold craft lager (180 ZAR / $10).
In the afternoon, I explored the Keyes Art Mile in Rosebank, the vibrant epicenter of Johannesburg's contemporary design renaissance. Browsing the world-renowned Goodman Gallery and SMAC Gallery, the bold energy of young African contemporary painters was electrifying. I enjoyed an artisan flat white and pastry at Marble's ground-floor café before heading upstairs to Marble restaurant for dinner.
Chef David Higgs' rooftop theater of fire at Marble ($110 per person) delivered one of the best meals of my life. Sitting on the terrace watching the sun set over the world's largest urban forest, savoring ribeye grilled over open wood coals paired with a bold Kanonkop Pinotage, Johannesburg's cosmopolitan brilliance shone brightly.
