Kathmandu is a mystical mountain basin surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks, packed with UNESCO medieval Durbar squares, sacred stupas with all-seeing Buddha eyes, fluttering prayer flags, and centuries-old Newari craftsmanship.

My 3 Weeks Here

Stepping into the courtyard of Dwarika’s Hotel ($450 USD per night) in Kathmandu feels like entering a living museum of Newari royal architecture. Rebuilt using intricately carved 14th-to-19th-century reclaimed wooden window lattices, red terracotta brickwork, and brass lanterns, Dwarika’s preserves the ancient architectural soul of the Kathmandu Valley with sublime five-star luxury.

At sunrise, I headed to Boudhanath Stupa (400 NPR entry), one of the largest spherical stupas in the world. Walking clockwise with the flow of Tibetan pilgrims, spinning embossed brass prayer wheels while the giant painted Eyes of Buddha watched serenely from the gilded tower above, the air was thick with the scent of juniper incense and butter lamps. Ascending to a rooftop cafe overlooking the plaza for a steaming cup of spiced Himalayan masala chai, the rhythmic chanting of 'Om Mani Padme Hum' resonated straight to my heart.

The valley’s ancient kingdoms offer architectural marvels at every turn. In Bhaktapur Durbar Square and Patan, I wandered through medieval courtyards filled with multi-tiered pagodas, golden spires, and bronze stone carvings crafted by master Newari artisans. For lunch, I feasted on a traditional Newari thali (850 NPR) and steaming baskets of spiced jhol momos (juicy buffalo dumplings swimming in a spicy sesame-tomato broth, 250 NPR) that warmed me from the inside out.

The ultimate highlight was a scenic early morning flight aboard a Yeti Airlines turboprop ($230 USD). Gazing out the window as the first rays of morning light turned the jagged, snow-capped summit of Mount Everest (Sagarmatha) and the Himalayan range into blinding gold was a spiritual vision that will stay with me forever. Kathmandu is a gateway to the heavens.
