My 3 Weeks Here

Arriving at The Datai Langkawi (roughly RM 3,800 per night), nestled deep inside a ten-million-year-old virgin rainforest along Datai Bay, felt like entering a secluded Jurassic paradise. As I walked down the grand open-air wooden pavilion, great hornbills swooped between colossal canopy trees, and dusky leaf monkeys peeked curiously from the branches. The harmony between raw, primordial nature and ultra-refined Malaysian hospitality was breathtaking.

My mornings started with a guided rainforest walk led by the resident naturalist. We spotted flying lemurs camouflaged against bark, vibrant kingfishers, and rare orchids before taking the steep path down to Datai Bay’s crescent beach, regularly ranked among National Geographic’s top ten beaches in the world. The Andaman water was calm, emerald-tinted, and so warm it felt like silk.

For high adventure, I boarded a private luxury boat to explore the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park (RM 800 for 3 hours). Gliding through twisted mangrove channels, we observed majestic brahminy kites and white-bellied sea eagles diving for fish against dramatic 500-million-year-old limestone sea arches. Later, I rode the Langkawi SkyCab cable car up Mount Machinchang to walk across the curving 125-meter Langkawi Sky Bridge, suspended 660 meters above sea level with dizzying views stretching across the Andaman Sea all the way to Thailand.

Evenings were spent enjoying Malaysian fine dining at The Gulai House, an authentic traditional timber house tucked inside the jungle. Over steaming bowls of beef rendang simmered in rich toasted coconut paste (RM 140) and tiger prawns glazed with spicy tamarind sambal, accompanied by fine wine, the jungle symphony of cicadas and tree frogs provided a magical natural soundtrack.
