Luxor

Egypt · Africa

Often hailed as the world's greatest open-air museum, Luxor rests on the banks of the mighty River Nile where ancient Thebes once commanded an empire. Towering hypostyle columns of Karnak, subterranean pharaonic tombs in the Valley of the Kings, and timeless feluccas drifting at sunset preserve four millennia of monumental history.

My 3 Weeks Here

Gliding onto the grounds of the Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor ($380/night), built in 1886 on the east bank of the Nile, feels like entering the golden era of archaeological exploration. This is the very hotel where Howard Carter announced the discovery of King Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922. Walking through its grand Victorian corridors, sipping afternoon tea on the veranda overlooking lush bougainvillea gardens and the calm Nile, was sheer transportive luxury.

At 5:00 AM the following morning, I boarded a hot air balloon ($140) to greet the Egyptian dawn over the West Bank. Floating silently above the barren cliffs of the Theban Necropolis, the morning sun illuminated the Colossi of Memnon and the dramatic terraced temple of Queen Hatshepsut cut into sheer limestone mountain walls. Below, emerald green sugar cane fields contrasted sharply against the stark golden desert sands.

Descending back to earth, our private Egyptologist guided us into the Valley of the Kings. Descending deep into the tomb of Seti I (KV17, extra ticket 1,800 EGP / $38), my breath caught: the vibrant lapis-lazuli, ochre, and gold astronomical ceiling paintings and hieroglyphics looked as fresh as if painted yesterday. We also stood before the golden mummy mask in Tutankhamun's intimate resting place.

In the late afternoon, we explored the monumental Temple of Karnak on the East Bank. Walking through the Great Hypostyle Hall, dwarfed by 134 towering sandstone columns carved like flowering papyrus stalks rising 70 feet into the air, the sheer ambition of Ramses II and ancient pharaohs overwhelmed the senses.

As twilight descended, Luxor Temple was illuminated with dramatic golden uplighting. I chartered a traditional wooden felucca ($30) to drift along the Nile with the evening breeze, watching the temple colonnades glow against the amethyst sky. Luxor is an epic journey through the cradle of civilization that leaves you forever mesmerized.
