My 3 Weeks Here

Descending into the Aburrá Valley at twilight, Medellín looked like an endless sea of amber diamonds climbing up emerald mountain ridges. The pleasant 72-degree breeze earned the city its moniker: The City of Eternal Spring. I checked into The Click Clack Hotel Medellín in fashionable El Poblado, a striking glass-and-steel architectural wonder bursting with hanging green foliage. My Grand Suite ($420/night) offered sweeping views of the lush hillside, a private freestanding soaking tub, and custom minimalist design.

Mornings began with world-class coffee. I walked to Pergamino Café on Vía Provenza, ordering a pourover of naturally processed Geisha coffee from a family finca in Antioquia, paired with warm pandebono ($14). The surrounding streets of Provenza were closed to cars, shaded by tall trees, and lined with upscale boutiques, artisan perfumeries, and open-air cocktail bars. In the afternoon, I took a private tour of Comuna 13. Ascending the outdoor electric escalators that revolutionized the community, I witnessed breathtaking street art murals, breakdancing crews, and heard moving stories of transformation and resilience.

Dinner was at Elcielo by Chef Juan Manuel Barrientos, famous for its avant-garde sensory tasting menu ($145). The twenty-course experience featured a chocolate therapy ritual where warm melted chocolate is poured over your hands to awaken olfactory senses, followed by courses of slow-cooked river fish with coffee foam and yucca gnocchi.

The following day, I chartered a private helicopter to Guatapé ($650), flying over tranquil turquoise reservoir lakes before climbing the iconic 740 steps of El Peñol rock for breathtaking 360-degree views. Back in Medellín, we celebrated the night at Envy Rooftop in the Charlee Hotel, sipping passion fruit aguardiente cocktails beside the glass-bottomed pool while house beats echoed across the valley. Medellín is resilient, stylish, and endlessly welcoming.
