Nairobi

Kenya · Africa

Nairobi is a dynamic African metropolis where sleek glass high-rises stand against the backdrop of acacia plains teeming with free-roaming wildlife. As East Africa's economic powerhouse, the Green City in the Sun offers an exhilarating blend of urban sophistication, thriving contemporary art, and direct access to wild safaris.

My 3 Weeks Here

There is no other city in the world where you can wake up, gaze out your bedroom window, and have an endangered Rothschild's giraffe poke its head through the French windows to share your breakfast. Checking into the iconic Giraffe Manor ($1,850/night) in the lush suburb of Karen felt like stepping into an English country estate transposed to the Kenyan highlands. Feeding dried grass pellets directly from my hands to a majestic giraffe named Daisy while sipping freshly brewed Kenyan AA coffee was an unforgettable bucket-list moment.

By mid-morning, I visited the nearby Sheldrick Wildlife Trust ($50 donation). Watching dozens of rescued orphaned baby elephants race playfully out of the forest to guzzle giant bottles of milk and roll around in red mud baths brought tears of pure joy to my eyes. The dedicated keepers shared poignant stories of conservation and wildlife rehabilitation.

For lunch, I headed to Talisman in Karen, an artistic gastropub set in a bohemian garden adorned with carved woodwork and Afghan carpets. Over a dish of feta and coriander samosas paired with chili-ginger glazed Norwegian salmon (3,400 KES / $26), I chatted with local contemporary artists exhibiting paintings on the veranda.

In the afternoon, I embarked on a game drive in Nairobi National Park ($43 park fee)—the world's only wildlife park within touching distance of a major capital. Within forty-five minutes of leaving downtown skyscrapers behind, we spotted endangered black rhinos grazing in open grassland, a coalition of cheetahs hunting in the distance, and lions sunning themselves with glass skyline towers gleaming on the horizon.

My culinary journey wrapped up at Cultiva Kenya in Karen, an innovative farm-to-table pop-up concept by Ecuadorian chef Ariel Moscardi. The wood-fired ceviche with passion fruit tiger's milk and grilled aged ribeye served with organic garden vegetables was phenomenal (6,500 KES per person). Nairobi is energetic, creative, and utterly captivating.
