Petra

Jordan · Middle East

Carved directly into the swirling rose-pink sandstone canyons of southern Jordan, Petra is one of the world's most awe-inspiring archaeological wonders. The ancient Nabataean capital reveals centuries of lost trade secrets, monumental tombs, and windswept clifftop monasteries hidden behind narrow desert chasms.

My 3 Weeks Here

Nothing in world travel prepares you for the dramatic reveal of Al-Khazneh (The Treasury). Entering the Siq at 6:00 AM—a mile-long serpentine gorge flanked by vertical cliff walls rising 600 feet—the morning shadows were cool and silent. As the narrow chasm parted by just a few inches, a glowing sliver of Greek Corinthian capitals carved into rose-pink rock emerged. Stepping into the sunlit plaza as the first golden rays struck the 2,000-year-old sandstone façade was pure cinematic magic.

I checked into the Mövenpick Resort Petra ($350/night), situated literally steps from the visitor center entrance, before securing a private Bedouin guide named Raed. We bypassed the donkey handlers and climbed the Al-Khubtha trail, scaling hundreds of rock-hewn steps to reach the legendary cliff ledge looking directly down at the Treasury from 500 feet above. Sitting in a makeshift Bedouin tent sipping sweet cardamom black tea brewed over olive wood embers (3 JOD / $4.20), I felt completely on top of the ancient world.

After a hearty lunch of mansaf—tender braised lamb over saffron rice with fermented jameed yogurt sauce and pine nuts (18 JOD)—we set out for the grueling 850-step ascent to Ad-Deir (The Monastery). The afternoon sun bathed the sandstone valley in shades of crimson, plum, and butterscotch. When the monumental 48-meter-high Monastery emerged atop the plateau, its monumental scale dwarfed every visitor. From the 'Top of the World' viewpoint just beyond, you could gaze across the Araba valley into the misty Israeli Negev desert.

That evening, I returned for Petra by Night ($25 JOD). Over 1,500 flickering candles illuminated the pathway through the dark Siq and paved the plaza in front of the Treasury. Sitting cross-legged on Bedouin rugs beneath a canopy of stars while listening to the haunting melodies of the Bedouin rababa violin felt like stepping into an ancient Arabian myth.

Before leaving Wadi Musa, I enjoyed an authentic Jordanian cooking workshop at Petra Kitchen (35 JOD), rolling fresh shrak bread and preparing sumac-dusted fattoush and smoky moutabal. Petra is a profound testament to ancient human ingenuity that leaves you completely humbled.
