My 3 Weeks Here

Standing atop the double-deck Dom Luís I Bridge at golden hour, watching traditional wooden rabelo boats bobbing along the Douro River while the terracotta rooftops of Ribeira glowed amber, I fell completely under Porto's romantic spell. I based myself at The Yeatman in Vila Nova de Gaia—a wine lover's luxury hotel where every private terrace looks across the river at the postcard-perfect city skyline.

My mornings were dedicated to architectural wonder and literary charm. I stepped inside São Bento Railway Station to admire the twenty thousand hand-painted blue-and-white azulejo tiles depicting heroic Portuguese battles. Just down the street, I had early VIP entry to Livraria Lello, the neo-Gothic bookstore with its crimson helical staircase and stained-glass ceiling that inspired J.K. Rowling. Afterwards, we stopped at Manteigaria for piping-hot pastéis de nata sprinkled with cinnamon (€1.30).

In the afternoon, we crossed back to Vila Nova de Gaia for a private vintage Port tasting at Graham's 1890 Lodge (€65). Sitting inside their 130-year-old stone cellar surrounded by oak casks holding millions of liters of maturing wine, we tasted single harvest Colheitas and a magnificent 30-Year-Old Tawny Port paired with artisan Queijo da Serra sheep's cheese.

For dinner, we walked along the bustling Cais da Ribeira before sitting down at the two-Michelin-starred The Yeatman Gastronomic Restaurant. Chef Ricardo Costa delivered a breathtaking multi-course voyage celebrating northern Portugal's coastal bounty—Carabineiro prawn with shellfish emulsion and suckling pig belly paired with rare Douro table wines. Porto is soulful, rich, and deeply rewarding.
