My 3 Weeks Here

Landing at Keflavík Airport, the surreal landscape of moss-covered black lava fields made me feel as though I had arrived on the surface of another planet. I transferred directly to The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland, an ultra-exclusive subterranean sanctuary carved directly into the 800-year-old volcanic lava rock. Stepping into my private lagoon suite, I slipped straight into the milky-blue, mineral-rich geothermal waters (38°C/100°F) right from my private terrace.

After an indulgent morning floating with silica mud masks and sipping green smoothies in the mineral waters, we drove forty minutes into Reykjavik to check into The Reykjavik EDITION on the Old Harbour. The sleek Scandinavian timber interiors and floor-to-ceiling glass windows framed the shimmering glass honeycomb facade of the Harpa Concert Hall.

My afternoon began with a walk up Skólavörðustígur to Hallgrímskirkja, the towering basalt-column-inspired church that anchors the city. We rode the elevator to the top tower (1,300 ISK) for a 360-degree view of Reykjavik's brightly painted tin-roofed houses and snow-capped mountain peaks. Afterwards, we stopped at Brauð & Co for a piping-hot, sticky cinnamon-cardamom roll fresh from the oven (750 ISK).

At nightfall, we boarded a private super-jeep excursion (€600) into the pitch-black wilderness of Thingvellir National Park to chase the Aurora Borealis. Wrapped in cozy thermal goose-down parkas, drinking hot chocolate spiked with Icelandic Brennivín, we watched ribbons of neon emerald, violet, and magenta light dance across the Arctic sky in silent choreography. For late-night dining back in town, we sat at the chef's counter at Dill, Iceland's pioneering Michelin-starred restaurant, savoring Arctic char with fermented birch and reindeer tartare. Iceland is breathtakingly primal and endlessly hypnotic.
