Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda · Africa

Set along the dramatic Virunga volcanic range in northern Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is the world's premier sanctuary for endangered mountain gorillas. Trekking through lush bamboo rainforests in the mist provides one of the planet's most profound, transformative, and exclusive wildlife encounters.

My 3 Weeks Here

Arriving in the misty foothills of the Virunga Mountains and checking into Singita Kwitonda Lodge ($2,650/night), the dedication to conservation and barefoot luxury is immediately apparent. Built with volcanic rock, river clay, and handcrafted timber, each private suite features an indoor fireplace, heated outdoor plunge pool, and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows looking directly out at the mist-shrouded peaks of Mount Sabyinyo and Mount Gahinga.

The morning of the gorilla trek began at 6:30 AM at the Kinigi park headquarters with hot Rwandan tea and an energizing traditional Intore dance performance. Armed with walking sticks, gaiters, and accompanied by park rangers and a local porter named Emmanuel, we hiked into the dense bamboo rainforest of Volcanoes National Park ($1,500 gorilla permit). For two hours, we climbed steep volcanic slopes covered in wild celery and giant lobelias, tracking machete-cleared paths in the footsteps of legendary primatologist Dian Fossey.

Suddenly, our head tracker signaled to halt and lower our voices. Pushing through a curtain of emerald bamboo, my breath caught: just ten feet away sat the Sabyinyo gorilla family. The massive silverback patriarch, weighing over 400 pounds with shimmering silver fur across his muscular back, chewed calmly on bamboo shoots while casting a calm, intelligent gaze in our direction. Nearby, a playful two-year-old infant somersaulted through the ferns and beat his tiny chest. Spending that sacred, uninterrupted hour observing our closest primate cousins in their undisturbed habitat was a deeply emotional experience that brought tears to my eyes.

Returning to the lodge, we were greeted with warm towels and foot massages by the roaring stone fireplace. That evening, we savored a farm-to-table six-course dinner paired with vintage South African wines, sharing stories of an encounter that forever redefines your perspective on the natural world. Rwanda is an inspiring testament to conservation triumph.

Insider Tips

💡

Rwanda gorilla permits ($1,500 per person) are strictly limited per day; secure permits 6-12 months in advance.

💡

Hire a local porter at the trailhead ($20 + tip); they assist with carrying gear, navigating slippery terrain, and it directly supports the local community.

💡

Wear waterproof hiking boots, long breathable trousers, garden gloves (for nettles), and moisture-wicking gaiters.

💡

Maintain a minimum distance of 7-10 meters from gorillas, and wear a medical face mask during the encounter to protect them from respiratory illness.
