My 3 Weeks Here

Touching down on the bush airstrip at Seronera aboard a bush plane from Arusha, the sheer, boundless scale of the Serengeti struck me immediately. Golden plains stretched unobstructed to every horizon, punctuated only by flat-topped acacia trees and ancient granite kopjes. My base for the expedition was the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti ($2,100/night), an architectural masterpiece where the infinity pool looks directly out over an active watering hole frequented daily by elephant herds.

My first sunrise began with a hot air balloon safari ($650 per person) with Miracle Experience. Rising silently into the dawn sky at 5:30 AM as the golden sun breached the mist, we floated over thousands of wildebeest marching in winding, relentless ribbons across the plains. Looking down from 1,000 feet, we spotted a pride of lions lounging atop a sun-warmed kopje and giraffes gracefully striding beneath acacia crowns. Upon landing softly in the bush, we were greeted with a white-tablecloth English breakfast complete with chilled champagne.

During afternoon game drives in our customized pop-top 4x4 Land Cruiser with our expert safari guide, Juma, the drama of nature unfolded in real time. We tracked a female leopard resting high in the branches of a sausage tree, with her freshly caught impala draped securely over a limb. Later, near the Mara River in northern Serengeti, we witnessed the pulse-pounding intensity of the Great Migration: thousands of wildebeest plunging into churning brown waters, braving lurking prehistoric Nile crocodiles in a desperate, thunderous bid to reach green pastures.

Back at the lodge by nightfall, we gathered around the open-air Boma fireplace for Maasai warrior singing and storytelling, accompanied by grilled dry-aged beef fillet and a bold South African Pinotage. Falling asleep in my luxury tented villa to the distant roar of territorial lions and the laughing calls of hyenas under a dazzling Milky Way was the most grounding, thrilling experience of my life. The Serengeti is nature in its purest, most untamed perfection.

Insider Tips

💡

Bring neutral-toned safari clothing (khakis, tans, greens); avoid bright colors and dark blue/black, which attract tsetse flies.

💡

Pack a professional camera with a telephoto zoom lens (at least 300mm-400mm) for spectacular wildlife close-ups.

💡

Timing is crucial: visit July-October for northern Mara River crossings, or January-March in southern Ndutu for the calving season.

💡

Park conservation fees are steep and strictly cashless; book with reputable luxury operators who include all permits.
