My 3 Weeks Here

From my panoramic skyline suite at the W Taipei (roughly 14,000 NT$ per night) in the glitzy Xinyi district, the colossal bamboo-shaped silhouette of Taipei 101 dominated the window like a green jade monolith piercing the sky. Taipei has a warm, welcoming, impeccably safe heartbeat that immediately makes you feel at home, while its culinary obsession is legendary.

I started my day taking the sleek MRT to Yongkang Street for an essential pilgrimage to the original Din Tai Fung. Watching the white-masked chefs through glass windows folding exactly 18 delicate pleats on every dumpling with surgical precision, I devoured steamer baskets of classic pork and black truffle Xiao Long Bao (480 NT$)—thin, translucent skins bursting with rich, piping-hot savory broth. Afterward, I stopped for a brown sugar boba milk tea from a nearby tea stand (65 NT$), chewiness and creamy sweetness in perfect harmony.

In the afternoon, I rode the Maokong Gondola up misty mountain slopes carpeted with terraced tea plantations. Sitting on the open terrace of Yao Yue Teahouse, I brewed high-mountain Tieguanyin oolong tea over a tabletop burner, looking out over the entire Taipei valley below as mountain breezes carried the sweet aroma of roasted tea leaves.

Night in Taipei belongs entirely to the night markets. At Raohe Night Market, I joined the line at the ornamental entrance gate for Fuzhou Ancestral Pepper Buns (60 NT$), pulling crisp, sesame-crusted dough baked against the walls of clay tandoor-style ovens to reveal juicy, black-pepper minced pork. Later, hiking the stone stairs of Elephant Mountain for sunset, watching the city ignite in millions of neon lights beneath Taipei 101, Taipei proved itself as Asia's warmest modern metropolis.
