Victoria Falls
Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya ('The Smoke That Thunders'), Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Spanning over 1.7 kilometers across the Zambezi River on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, its colossal curtain of falling water creates rainbows, lush rainforests, and epic safari adventures.
My 3 Weeks Here
You hear the thunderous roar of Victoria Falls miles before you see it. Checking into The Victoria Falls Hotel ($780/night) on the Zimbabwean side, founded in 1904, the manicured lawns frame an iconic view of the historic Victoria Falls Bridge spanning the gorge, with clouds of spray rising 1,000 feet into the clear African sky.
Dressed in a lightweight waterproof poncho, I walked along the edge of the gorge in Victoria Falls National Park ($50 entry). As I reached Danger Point and Cataract View, the sheer volume of 500 million liters of water plunging per minute into the 350-foot chasm created a perpetual drenching rainstorm and luminous double rainbows arcing across the abyss. The raw, primeval power of the falls reverberated straight through my chest.
For the ultimate rush, I took off on the 'Flight of Angels' helicopter tour ($175 for 13 minutes). Banking over the dramatic zigzagging basalt gorges carved over millions of years by the Zambezi River, the aerial perspective revealed the colossal scale of this natural masterpiece.
During the low-water season, I crossed to the Zambian side for the world's most daring swim: Devil's Pool on Livingstone Island ($185). Guided by experienced local rivermen, I swam across the upper Zambezi and peered directly over the edge of the 100-meter vertical drop, with deafening water rushing past on either side.
In the late afternoon, I boarded the luxury Ra-Ikane river cruiser ($95) for a sunset safari on the upper Zambezi. Sipping a chilled gin and tonic and nibbling on smoked crocodile carpaccio, we drifted past pods of snorting hippos and elephant families swimming trunk-in-air across the golden river. Victoria Falls is an unforgettable celebration of nature's majesty.
