Vienna

Austria · Europe

The imperial capital of classical music, grand baroque palaces, and opulent coffeehouse culture. Vienna exudes timeless aristocratic elegance with its Ringstrasse boulevards, Lippizaner stallions, and decadent Sachertorte chocolate cake.

My 3 Weeks Here

Checking into Hotel Sacher Vienna opposite the Vienna State Opera, I was immediately wrapped in old-world Habsburg majesty: crystal chandeliers, crimson velvet upholstery, and gold-leaf mirrors. Waiting on my silver welcome tray was an authentic Original Sacher-Torte (€9.50), its rich dark chocolate glaze and tart apricot jam pairing perfectly with a dollop of unsweetened whipped cream.

Vienna is a city that invented the art of slow living. My first morning was spent at Café Central, reading under high neo-Gothic vaulted arches where Trotsky and Freud once sat, ordering a velvety Melange coffee and warm apple strudel with vanilla sauce. Afterwards, I took a private carriage ride (Fiaker) down the grand Ringstrasse, passing the monumental Hofburg Imperial Palace, Parliament, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

At noon, I toured the summer residence of Empress Sisi at Schönbrunn Palace. Walking through the 40 imperial staterooms and the Great Gallery—where a six-year-old Mozart once played for Empress Maria Theresa—felt like stepping straight into a history book. We strolled up through the manicured French gardens to the Gloriette colonnade for panoramic views over the city.

In the evening, I donned an evening gown for an opera performance at the Vienna State Opera, seated in a plush private loge (€280). Following the final curtain call, we walked across to Steirereck inside the Stadtpark, Austria's premier two-Michelin-starred restaurant. The signature char fish cooked tableside in molten beeswax with yellow carrot and pollen was a culinary tour de force. Vienna is imperial elegance at its most refined.
